BOFORM’S MANUFACTURING
THROUGH MORE THAN 37 YEARS

The story of boform began in Aalborg in 1979 when carpenter Ove Skou, unimpressed with the quality and design of the kitchens he was installing for the kitchen manufacturers of the time, decided to develop his own kitchen design. Armed with a squared paper pad and a yellow Viking pencil he came up with the rough draft of what was to become line, a groundbreaking kitchen design for the time. Ove had come up with the idea of handleless fronts, whereby drawers and doors were opened by grabbing the edge or the side. This creates continuous horisontal and vertical lines - the signature look of the line model. Since then, nearly every kitchen manufacturer has incorporated the design but rarely at a level that matches up to boform’s when it comes to quality and eye for details. As Ove likes to put it “boform line - a classic among copies”, a saying that was used for a series of advertisements in the 1980s.

ELEGANCE AND TIMELESSNESS

line was inducted into the Danish Design Index in 1986 and has gone through a gentle evolution over the past 35 years while respecting the subtle elegance and timelessness that even today forms the basis of boform’s way of thinking about fixtures and fittings. Ove retained sole ownership of boform all the way until 1993 where he entered into a partnership with John Kindberg who would become responsible for finances and project sales as well as overseeing day-to-day operations. This gave Ove the freedom to devote himself to his passion - design development and the tireless search for new methods and materials based on the adage: there is always room for improvement.

CHOSEN BY VISIONARY DEVELOPERS AND ARCHITECTS

John and Ove’s partnership proved to be a fruitful one. boform’s reputation as a significant design company was expanded on with a continuous stream of unique and groundbreaking solutions from Ove. At the same time, John secured a foothold for boform in an ever-growing market for high-end residential properties where developers and architects often chose to collaborate with boform to add an extra edge to the projects thereby rise above the rest of the market. See more under the tab “project”. In 2007 Ove and John decided to hand over the company to a new group of owners led by Industri Udvikling.

INNOVATION BASED ON BOFORM’S VALUES

In 2010, Industri Udvikling hired Lars Mehlum as CEO. boform’s unwavering belief in the demand for products of uncompromising quality and stellar craftsmanship was put to the test by the recession. A strategy for boform’s future course had to be put into action. Unlike many of the closest competitors, who partially or entirely outsourced their manufacturing to low-wage regions at the cost of quality, Lars decided, with the full backing of the board, to do the exact opposite. A process of introspection and an organisational makeover of both the sales branch and at the Aalborg factory was set into motion. Work began on creating new design lines and expanding the catalogue with an eye on craftsmanship.
